Greensboro-based Honda Aircraft Co. declared that it has started manufacture on its $4.5 million lightweight business jet. The statement was made in the course of a press conference at the National Business Aviation Association annual meeting and convention in Orlando, Florida.

Michimasa Fujino, the company's president and CEO, said in a statement, “An assembly line for HondaJet production is in place, major aircraft components including the fuselage and wing have been produced, and we have started assembly of the first customer aircraft. Commencing production is the most important milestone in the HondaJet program to date, with only the future Federal Aviation Administration Type Certification and first customer delivery ranking greater in significance.”

The FAA certification is planned to happen during the first half of 2013. Honda has beforehand said that it hopes to be producing 70 to 100 flying sports planes per year by 2014. Independently, Honda publicized that it contracted an agreement with Skyservice Business Aviation of Canada to reinforce sales of the aircraft in that country.

Chomarat has acquired the authorization EN 9100:2009 Quality Management standards for the aerospace industry. This European standard outlines specific performance and customer satisfaction requirements for the aerospace industry to meet detailed excellence goals.

Michel Cognet, Chomarat group CEO said, “Security concerns are high in aerospace, and are synonymous with key business issues. This certification is a real opportunity to strengthen Chomarat’s presence in this market and further develop our carbon range.” Specifically, the company is increasing the application of its trademarked C-Ply bi-angle thin ply multiaxial material for aerospace and equipment manufacturers. Cognet stated, “In aeronautics, thin plies (50-75 g/m²) such as in C-PLY are a key element for parts such as aerospace fuselage components.”

Other parts, like beams, could also profit from this multiaxial assembly, comprising shallow 20° or 30° angles, permitting weight savings up to 30 percent likened to a standard carbon construction, declares the company.

In the aviation sector, this material is being tried in parts like wings and wing components. A helicopter part has previously been fashioned by VX Aerospace using C-PLY Bi-Angle. The research team is presently in work on a demonstrator for a lightweight sport aircraft.
